Help Children Discover Architecture One Page at a Time
AIA members and firms are invited to join CAF’s Architecture by the Book Built Environment Education Program. (Sign up below!)
Did you have an architect or community program that sparked your passion for architecture? If not, here’s your chance to be that person! We know many architects are eager to share their love for the profession but may not have the time to create a curriculum or commit to long-term volunteering.
That’s why CAF launched Architecture by the Book, a Built Environment Education Program (BEEP) designed to fit into a busy schedule. In just 90 minutes, this program introduces students to architecture through an engaging lesson on a notable architect or architectural concept. It’s a rewarding and easy-to-manage micro-volunteering opportunity that works for today’s architects and classrooms.
Originally developed and piloted by AIA Central Valley, Architecture by the Book was expanded statewide through CAF and AIA California in 2024. We aim to eventually have a wide range of lessons—will your firm be one of the supporters?
This program connects architects, emerging professionals and architecture students with children, helping them explore architecture and design through book readings, presentations, and activities. Lessons focus on architects from diverse backgrounds, and a key goal is to reach underrepresented schools and communities.
Each lesson includes four easy-to-follow components, all available FREE on the CAF website:
- A book recommendation highlighting an architect or architectural topic
- A PDF presentation that dives deeper into the architect or concept
- A creative hands-on activity using recycled or readily available classroom materials
- YOU–a local AIA architect volunteer to lead and inspire students through the lesson
Firms and individual AIA members can support a lesson. Here’s how:
- Fill out the interest form below.
- You’ll receive an email with:
- A list of books to choose from. Pick and purchase one, or suggest your own (must be child/teen-friendly and architecture-related).
- A downloadable PowerPoint template ready for you to personalize—perfect for emerging professionals or interns to take on!
- Information on making a $500 donation to CAF to help with program development and management costs.
- Once your lesson is uploaded to the CAF website, spread the word! Share your firm’s involvement on social media and commit to teaching two lessons in your community.
- Encourage your firm’s architects to sign up for the “Add an Architect” list—an online resource connecting local schools and communities with architects.
Architecture by the Book was developed as a pilot by AIA Central Valley and is now powered by CAF, in collaboration with AIA California architecture firms and a grant from the AIA College of Fellows. We deeply appreciate everyone who has helped bring this initiative to life!
