Welcome to Architecture by the Book!

Architecture by the Book is a free educational program from the California Architectural Foundation (CAF) that introduces children to the world of architecture—with the help of local architect volunteers. Whether you’re a parent, educator, community leader, or architect, this program is a fun and engaging way to share architects and architecture with the next generation.

Created to spark curiosity and make architecture accessible to children from all backgrounds, each lesson is designed to be approachable, interactive, and inspiring. Participants explore how architecture connects to their everyday lives—and get a glimpse into a creative, meaningful profession they might not otherwise encounter.

Originally developed by AIA Central Valley, Architecture by the Book expanded statewide in 2023 through a collaboration with AIA California and CAF and a generous grant from the AIA College of Fellows. To date the program has successfully partnered with Scientific Adventures for Girls, the Kern County Women in STEM Speakers Bureau, the Viñoly Foundation, the AIA California Monterey Design Conference, and the Palenke Arts multicultural arts organization–as well as individual charter and public elementary schools.

How It Works

Each lesson is simple, flexible, and easy to implement—whether you’re teaching in a classroom, volunteering as an architect, or supporting learning at home. Lessons include:

• A book recommendation highlighting a key architectural idea or figure
• A downloadable presentation to guide discussion and spark imagination
• A hands-on activity using recycled or easily available materials
• A visiting architect to help bring it all to life
