The California Architectural Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting excellence in architecture through scholarships, grants, and educational programs–bridging the gap between the academic and professional worlds. What is capX?
The California Architectural Practice Experience (capX) is a statewide program designed to expand hands-on, practical experience in architecture firms and other architectural practice settings. In its first year, capX focuses on supporting community college students but is open to everyone, including graduates seeking internships or employment opportunities.
The program aims to create a collaborative community of architects, emerging professionals, educational institutions and AIA Chapters to address opportunities and trends in architecture education and practice to help strengthen the architectural profession in California.
How does the program work?
capX connects individuals interested in the architecture profession with firms of all sizes for paid internships and job shadowing opportunities. It is a flexible resource designed to:
- Establish internship or job-shadowing programs for firms without one.
- Supplement existing internship or mentorship programs.
- Provide a pathway for firms and participants to connect to the architectural pipeline.
Registration takes place each spring through an enrollment form on the CAF website. Participants may pay a small donation ($25 for firms, $10 for students) to support the program. Participants can select a timeframe and structure that works best for them, including spring, summer, or ongoing schedules, and options for paid internships, academic credit, or unpaid job shadowing.
AIA Chapters play an essential role in promoting capX by sharing enrollment dates and encouraging local firm participation. In turn, capX connects enrolled students with their local AIA Chapter, introducing them to valuable networking opportunities and resources available through AIA.
Who can participate?
capX is open to firms and students, including those exploring architecture as a career or currently enrolled in architecture programs (community college or university). It is also open to individuals on the experience-only path to licensure who are eager to deepen their understanding of the profession.
What skills will students / early practitioners gain?
Through shadowing or interning, capX participants gain firsthand insight into the architectural profession. They meet practicing architects, connect with mentors, and receive guidance to help them on their professional journey. The program currently includes two virtual courses—Architecture Experience 101 and 102—to help emerging professionals understand what to expect and how to maximize their firm experience. A third course on resume development and interview preparation is under development.
Why should firms participate?
By participating as a capX mentor or host firm, you:
- Can establish a new internship or job-shadowing program—or enhance an existing one
- Expand your connection to the talent pipeline
- Directly influence and shape the next generation of architects
- Support industry growth and diversity by providing equitable access to practical experiences
- Gain fresh perspectives and benefit from the skills, creativity, and enthusiasm that students bring to a firm
What do educational institutions gain by participating?
capX strengthens the connection between classroom learning and real-world experience. Educational institutions benefit from:
- Improved job placement rates
- Enhanced relationships with industry professionals
- Enriched educational experiences through practical skill development
What makes capX special?
As a statewide program, capX connects students, architects and educational institutions to create a collaborative network that addresses emerging opportunities and trends in architecture education and practice. Participants benefit from the flexibility to choose placements near their school or closer to home during breaks.
